At the end of 2010, I found myself heavier than I have ever been. If I remember correctly I was 220 or 225, neither good numbers for my height and amount of muscle. I got sick of wearing baggy clothes and feeling huge. I also really wanted to get my running times faster and try and do a half marathon for the first time this year.
So I bought a book called the 4 Hour Body. It is full of interesting facts and ideas, one being the slow-carb diet. I did the slow-carb diet from January 1st until April 10th when I switched to Weight Watchers Online. Slow-carb was fun for a while, you eat NO carbs 6 days a week and then BINGE one day a week. It sounds like it wouldn’t work, but it does… I think I lost about 8lbs. I became a MASTER omelet maker thanks to Vanessa and practice (I ate an omelet EVERY DAY for almost 70 days). I can also finally say I have an official favorite ice cream flavor since I ate a PINT of it every Saturday.
Mmmmm.
I switched to Weight Watchers because I was tired of cooking and my weight-loss had stalled. There aren’t a lot of pre-prepared no-carb foods so I was cooking my brains out just to get a week of lunches made. After I switched I realized that I had been starving myself, and that’s why I stalled: laziness=eating less=no weight loss.
Weight Watchers is a nice plan and pretty easy to do if you have an iPod or iPhone. They have an app that does everything but let you input recipies, but you can easily do those online.
My current weight is 194lbs… so, I’ve lost at least 26lbs in 6 months. Not only that, but I have brought my average running speed from 11 to almost 9 minute miles!
I am very proud of this… so when work sent out an email saying how they were having a eat better challenge (like a step or activity challenge) I was in! Until I went to the website to get my recommended food. I typed in my height, weight and age… and that damn thing told me I was fat… OH SURE technically it said: ”The weight you entered is above the healthy range for your height. This may increase your risk for health problems. Some people who are overweight should consider weight loss. Click here for more information about health risks and whether you should try to lose weight, or talk with your health care provider.”
But I read it as “YOU FAT F*CK.”
*sigh* Why does it take such a small thing to basically tear down six months of proud achievements?
So this BMI crap still says I’m fat… in fact I’m still at least 12-50lbs over weight. I hate this chart, this chart is the devil. It is telling me that a HEALTHY person my age and height is 144-182lbs… while a FAT person is 189+up. Well THANKS Mr. Chart… at least I wasn’t ever OBESE according to you.
My goal weight right now is 189. I chose 189 because I haven’t been below 190 since high school. I was about 190 when Vanessa and I got married and I think I look pretty great in those pictures, the extra 1 pound is really just so I can SAY I’m under 190. :)
Once I hit that goal, I’m going to get a physical to see what my doc says. I have a fear that I could get TOO thin, and honestly I looked like a pencil-neck in my teens so I’m not really in a rush to look dorky.
Anyway, I love food… but at least now I love to run/hike/walk as well.
So I say, “To HELL with you Mr. Chart! My shorts are falling off and my large-sized T-shirts don’t make me feel ashamed to be in public. I’m doing great and you can’t make me feel bad anymore!”
