Ivy Wars

April 19, 2012 at 5:37 pm

Forget Star Wars; forget The Hunger Games. I’m engaged in an epic battle with a most insidious foe: English Ivy. We successfully removed it from our side yard a few years ago, but neglected to finish the job properly around the back of the house—and now we’re paying for it. It completely enveloped a yew bush (we were planning on chopping the yew anyway), and keeps sending shoots up into our air conditioner. In the […]

The Closet

April 3, 2012 at 4:14 pm

Oh hey… Yeah, I’m back! First off, I’m not going to address my 4 month hiatus here. That’s a topic for another post — or not — depending on whether I want to talk about it at all. So yeah… moving on. I’ve had this post idea on my mental list for a long time (two years to be exact). I believe I had “organize my closet” on my 2011 goal list, and now it […]

Resurfaced Stairs

November 20, 2011 at 10:37 pm

A couple of years ago, I resurfaced the stair risers going up to the second floor with some 1/4″ oak panels. The riser surface was painted white and I couldn’t manage to keep them from getting impossibly marred up with black kick marks. Plus there are knots in the wood that bleed through the paint. Now since we’re in the thick of House 2.0, Mike has been asking me, rather, BEGGING me to do the […]

House 2.0

March 17, 2011 at 9:20 pm

I’ve sat down to write this post maybe three times, and each time I became waylaid by a screaming baby or a hungry husband…or was it the other way around? I can’t be sure. :) Anyhoo, Mike and I have been increasingly dismayed by the lack of use the den gets. The only time it ever sees any action is the Halloween party, and that hardly seems an efficient use of space. The other thing we bemoan […]

The Great Purge of 2010

April 26, 2010 at 10:29 pm

Working on clearing out the Sprout’s room has proven to be a much more ambitious undertaking than I initially imagined. I foolishly thought I could simply take out the things that don’t belong in there, and, Voilà! turn it into a baby’s room. Oh, how wrong I was! The thing is… we need to clear space in other places of the house for those other objects to go. What was once just “clearing out the […]

Home Fires Burning

November 17, 2009 at 1:36 pm

As the days get colder and I become painfully aware of the temperature inside and out, I start thinking how much I would love a working fireplace. Shortly after we moved into our house, the fireplace had a huge leak and it turned out we needed a new chimney cap and new flashings. “Mr Sweep” did our repairs and told us that our fireplace was unsafe and unsuitable for fires, and that we shouldn’t use […]

Craigslist

June 17, 2009 at 11:50 am

So if you’ve noticed my flicker stream lately, you’ve seen a lot of strange random items I’ve photographed. The truth is, my garage is overrun with junk — trappings of a former existence, apartment living, and various cast-offs that are too nice to simply throw out. The budding environmentalist in me cringes at the thought of good items languishing in a land fill. Mike and I were toying with the idea of throwing an all-out […]

What Could've Been

May 29, 2009 at 9:42 pm

When we were house-hunting in ’03, and our realtor took us to what would eventually become our home, the first thing that greeted us was the previous homeowner’s decor. They were the original owners, so everything was very… mid-century… I guess… but not necessarily in a good way. In fact, I had seen pictures of the house online, and completely wrote it off because of the wall-to-wall blue carpet. But the floorplan charmed us and […]

Keeping Busy

May 18, 2009 at 1:35 pm

Maybe I’m feeling like I need to fill the gaps between freelance projects, but I’ve been making a mental list of the things I’d like to do around the house this summer and beyond. That’s not to say I’m not busy with freelance, but since I’m at home all day, every day, I get ample time to ponder the “imperfections” around here. Then I start thinking about what I can do for cheap, if not […]

Bathroom Bonanza: Days 17 & 18

May 6, 2009 at 2:45 pm

As I write this, the bathroom is 99% done. All that remains are the accessories: towel rods, toilet paper holder, etc. Unfortunately, they’re on backorder from the supply company and won’t be in until next week. Had I known they were backordered, I would have picked something else. Oh well! Yesterday, the mirror guy came in the morning (before the contractor, who showed up at 1). I can’t emphasize enough how much of a difference […]

Bathroom Bonanza: Days 13 to 16

May 4, 2009 at 6:37 pm

I’ve been a major slacker on the bathroom updates for the past few days. SORRY! Tiling began sometime late last week. The huge 12 x 24 tiles needed to be installed a few days at a time because the sheer weight of them just kept them from being done all at once — plus they’re a 1/2″ thick! What the hell was I thinking?! Lesson learned there! Also, the girl at the tile shop didn’t […]
